101 Short Breaks

Belgrade

Mark and David's verdict

The former Yugoslav capital on the banks of the Danube is a match for many of Europe’s better-known historic cities. Its compact pedestrianised centre is packed with interesting shops, bars, restaurants and museums. Prices are low, and the nightlife ranks among the most exciting on the continent.

Black Tomato says

Just a two hour flight away from the UK, Belgrade is the perfect ‘hot-list’ destination for a weekend escape. Unlike other eastern European cities, the Serbian capital remains a well-kept secret, offering up a healthy dose of hedonism mixed with some fantastic cultural offerings. And it’s still untainted by roving stag parties and school groups.

Spend your days exploring the beautiful old town, fortress and orthodox churches of the Kalemegdan area, taking in some of the last remnants of the Ottoman Empire, then immerse yourself in Belgrade’s exceptional nightlife.

Evenings here are booming; fantastic restaurants and bars, and a music scene that is stylish and classy, with a great twist. Many of the top nightspots are on the boats, barges and rafts which line the Danube and Sava rivers. Once you’re all partied out, head back to the sophisticated Hyatt Regency hotel to prepare for the next day.

Belgrade is still largely undiscovered by the tourist masses, but that is unlikely to be the case for long as word spreads about this uber-cool weekend break destination.
