Recommended place to stay: Hisa Franko

Hiša Franko says
Hiša Franko is not a classical hotel, more a relaxing country house restaurant with rooms.
The restaurant’s refreshing and creative cuisine is based on local and seasonal products and rated amongst the best in central Europe. Ana Roš, the chef, is considered to be one of leading ambassadors of Slovenian cuisine. The house also has a superb wine and cheese cellar, and a huge herb and flower garden - this is Valter’s world.
Our ten guest rooms are unique: each reflects a different moment in the life of owners Valter and Ana.
Hiša Franko is all about personal service in a laid back atmosphere. Sometimes children are around, another time the deer come down to the house, stealing apples from the trees. We’re hidden on the crossroads of two beautiful valleys in the footsteps of towering mountains, very close to wine regions and some great fishing.
The Soca river is one of the most beautiful in Europe and its wild turquoise waters are a paradise for walking and wild water sports. Meanwhile, the Nadiža river is a hidden gem situated just a kilometre from the house with crystal clear waterfalls and warm natural swimming pools. Spend a day there with a delicious picnic of Ana’s food and wine from Valter’s cellar.
The nearest airport is Trieste, less than 90 minutes away by road, while Ljubljana is about two hours away. Public transport is poor, so car hire is essential.

In the pristine setting of Slovenia’s Soca Valley – perfect for walking breaks – is one of our favourite small hotels in Europe. Hiša Franko has stylish modern rooms flooded with natural light above a world-class restaurant. Owners Valter and Ana are delightful and the eight-course tasting menu is sensational, as well as being great value.
