101 Short Breaks

Kenya safari

Our verdict

Kenya for the weekend? Yes, it can be done. Spend three nights at a lodge in the Masai Mara where you can see the Big Five and – if your timing is right – the migration of the wildebeest. There’s also an option to take a hot-air balloon safari. Overnight flights in both directions mean you can minimise time off work.

Somak Holidays says

Wildlife-lovers can indulge in lengthy sessions viewing the hippo pool from the comfort of the bar of Keekorok Lodge on this short break in Kenya’s Masai Mara.

The beauty and tranquility here are remarkable. Hippos languish in the water, just a nose or their eyes showing, a wildebeest might loll on the pool side and birds dip in and out in a flash of colour.

If you can tear yourself away, head for the bush where game drives are likely to include sightings of elephant, rhino and buffalo and perhaps even a leopard or lion. A hot air balloon ride will give you a bird’s eye view of it all.

Also at Keekorok there is a gorgeous swimming pool, and the chance to dine on the terrace overlooking the meandering hippos. Accommodation is comfortable and characterful, with chalets spread throughout the estate. Number 41 is the famous Kissinger room; famous names from Pope John Paul II, to Helmut Kohl and Henry Kissinger himself have stayed here.

Somak Holidays offer three nights at Keekorok Lodge, the first ever to be built in the Masai Mara, plus overnight flights from London and internal flights to the lodge’s airstrip from £1,395 per person travelling in April or May 2010. It’s extravagant and very special.
