101 Short Breaks

Rent a lighthouse

Mark and David's verdict

Britain's coastline is dotted with lighthouses. Whilst technology may have rendered many of them obsolete, you can stay in the former lighthouse keepers' cottages for a coastal break with a real sense of history plus a guarantee of great sea views and bracing walks. From North Yorkshire to Alderney, there's a superb choice of locations.

Rural Retreats says

We have teamed up with Trinity House to offer stays in a number of former lighthouse keepers’ cottages along the coasts of England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

The properties have each been carefully adapted and furnished to offer comfortable accommodation in a spectacular setting. Locations include Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Kent, Wales, North Yorkshire and Alderney.

With one, two or three bedrooms, these former lighthouses can accommodate couples, families or groups of friends seeking a coastal break in an historic property - with great views guaranteed.

Trinity House was originally granted a charter by Henry VIII in 1514 and is now a charitable organisation; amongst other responsibilities, it is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar.
