101 Short Breaks

Ireland’s Mourne Mountains

Our verdict

Just a short drive from Belfast, the Mourne Mountains is an area of outstanding natural beauty and reputedly the inspiration for C.S. Lewis's Narnia. The granite hills are a haven for hikers, bikers and anybody that wants to experience the peace and beauty of the mountains. They are also home to Slieve Donard, one of Ireland’s finest spa hotels.

Slieve Donard says

Set in six acres of private grounds at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, yet just 30 miles from Belfast, this magnificent Victorian hotel is ideally suited for a short break.

Take a walk through the grounds of Slieve Donard and you’re on one of the world’s top golf courses, Royal County Down, or stroll down to the golden sands swept by bracing sea breezes. If you want to explore the area, there’s horse riding and a number of National Trust nearby.

Back at the hotel, our Spa is one of the finest in Ireland if not Europe. Relax in the magnificent pool with its spectacular views of the beach, join a yoga or pilates class, or indulge in one of the wide range of ESPA treatments we offer.

All our 178 rooms and suites have recently been upgraded in a £15 million refurbishment, and offer luxurious comfort in a traditional style.

After cocktails in Chaplin’s Bar, named after Charlie Chaplin who stayed at the hotel in 1921, dine in the more formal Oak Restaurant, or enjoy a casual bite to eat in our pub-style bistro.

Slieve Donard is one of six Northern Ireland hotels in the Hastings Hotels group - others include the Europa, Culloden, Stormont, Everglades and Ballygally Castle.

A two-night stay costs from under £200 pp. Click here for more about the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa.
