101 Short Breaks

Petra

Our verdict

One of the classic 'see before you die' destinations, the rose red city of Petra, carved straight out of the sandstone escarpment, ranks alongside the Pyramids as a triumph of ancient architecture. With its scores of temples, palaces, theatre, tombs and a museum, it's a rewarding destination, even if only for a short stay.

Discover Jordan says

Nothing can quite prepare you for the jaw-dropping experience that is a visit to Petra, especially the wow factor as you emerge from the long narrow gorge to the most famous of the buildings, the Treasury. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and surely the eighth wonder of the world, this entire ‘Red Rose City’ was carved in stone to be the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom more than 2000 years ago.

We offer a choice of six hotels including luxury resorts such as the charming Beit Zaman, a 19th century village transformed into a modern hotel. Are all located within a mile of Petra which means you can get there early (the ticket office opens at 6am) to avoid the bigger tour groups and see the city glowing in the dawn. After an afternoon relaxing by the pool, return for the evening light - it’s magical.

Two or three days there will give you the chance to explore the myriad buildings including tombs, temples, colonnaded streets, an open air theatre, a 1st century monastery and museum. We can arrange an official guide for you, something we definitely recommend for at least your first day.

You’ll fly to Amman (five hours from London) and then take the three-hour journey by air-conditioned car to Petra. A three-night break in Beit Zaman with flights from Heathrow costs from £859 pp, or go for four nights and include a night on the Dead Sea en route back to Amman to make the most of your time in Jordan.
