Recommended place to stay: Star Castle Hotel

Star Castle Hotel says
Built in 1593 in the shape of an eight pointed star, the Star Castle sits atop the garrison of St Mary’s, the perfect viewing point for resident armies to spot invaders
Today, the castle – still perfectly intact – is a delightful family-owned and run hotel and the 2009 winner of one of the prestigious Good Hotel Guide’s Cesar awards. The owner, Robert Francis, spends most mornings out at sea catching the lobsters and crabs that are served daily in our Conservatory restaurant.
Our young and talented chef rises early too, to bake the bread that is served for breakfast and dinner, along with locally sourced meat, and vegetables from the hotel’s kitchen garden.
It’s easy to visit the other Isles of Scilly from St Mary’s. Every morning, Tim the boatman comes up to the Star Castle to offer our guests the chance to join him on a trip to an island or two – sometimes St Agnes and St Martins, or Bryher, other days the delightful island of Tresco with its world-famous botanical gardens.
The Star Castle’s 38 guest rooms are located within the main building and in the gardens. All are elegantly furnished and some have great views of the sea or harbour. Children are welcome, with high tea served each day (under fives are not permitted in the dining room for dinner).
