101 Short Breaks

The Royal Scotsman

Mark and David's verdict

One of Europe's most scenic railway journeys is also its most luxurious. The Royal Scotsman, part of the Orient-Express stable, travels the West Highland Line, leaving Edinburgh on a gentle chug through a wild landscape of glens, lochs and mountains. Trips take from 2 up to 7 nights, and the train berths at night to ensure you sleep soundly.

Orient Express says

There is a unique magic to waking up in your private cabin to see the morning sun chase the mist cascading from the mountains of the Isle of Skye, the rugged walls of Eilean Donan Castle, pine forests, lochs or wild moorland.

Accommodating just 36 guests in twin and single cabins, all with private facilities in a country-house style decadence, The Royal Scotsman offers a range of all inclusive itineraries from 2 to 7 nights. All journeys begin and end in Edinburgh and get off to a traditional start as you’re piped aboard.

With game-rich glens, lush pastures cropped by Aberdeen Angus cattle and rivers home to wild salmon, it’s not surprising that Scotland is known for quality cuisine. The Royal Scotsman is a moving feast with chefs preparing local specialties from venison, salmon and langoustines to delicious Dundee fruit cake and melt-in-the-mouth shortbread.

As evening falls, dress up for a formal dinner in the spectacular dining car followed by a nightcap in the bar car before retiring to your cabin whilst the train berths to ensure a perfect night’s sleep.

A hearty traditional Scottish breakfast awaits as the morning brings more spectacular views of Scotland’s ever-changing scenery and the chance to stop off en route for a spot of clay pigeon shooting or a Highland safari.
