101 Short Breaks

Tromso and the Northern Lights

Our verdict

The 'Aurora Borealis' - meaning the Dawn of the North - is one of the planet's most spectacular natural performances. Although sightings of these great ghostly arcs of colour dancing across the night sky can never be guaranteed, the odds are highest from Tromso in the north of Norway, which is suprisingly easy to reach from the UK.

Specialised Tours says

About 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the northernmost part of Norway, Tromso is acknowledged as one of the best places in the world for seeing the Northern Lights.

For the ultimate view of nature’s most spectacular light show, we can arrange for you to head out into the wilderness where you can enjoy a variety of activities such as husky and snowmobile safaris, as well as having the best possible sighting if the Northern Lights are on display.

Even without them, Tromso is a great choice for a winter city break. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, Tromso was the departure point for countless polar expeditions, and fascinating museums bear witness to many of these exploits. Other attractions include the stunning Arctic Cathedral, excellent restaurants, spectacular scenery, and a wide range of winter activities.

A break in Tromso can also be combined with other destinations, including Sweden’s Ice Hotel or the magical Lofoten Islands. Our new ‘Land of the Northern Lights Tour’ follows the route taken by Joanna Lumley in last winter’s BBC TV programme and we can even arrange an excursion with the same guide who realised the star’s dream of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Three nights in a 4-star hotel in Tromso cost around £775 pp from Heathrow via Oslo. There are also less frequent, but direct, flights from Gatwick.
