101 Short Breaks

UK party houses

Our verdict

If you're planning a family gathering to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary, or want to get together with friends for the weekend, consider renting a large house. Some of the grander mansions give you the option of a private chef, so you can ensure everyone is fed and watered without having to fret about shopping, cooking or washing up.

CV Travel says

We recently launched a collection of British houses for short breaks and longer stays. Recognising the demand for spectacular properties for larger house parties, family gatherings and special celebrations, we set out to find some of Britain’s most impressive country retreats in locations throughout England and Wales. Some have a local housekeeper or butler and most have the option of a full catering service on request, so you won’t need to lift a finger.

Jacobean Manor, near Chester, sleeps 15 in Grade 1 listed splendour (top left) with beautiful gardens, wood-panelled interiors and centuries of history. Falconry, clay-pigeon shooting and archery are offered with the resident gamekeeper.

Near North Walsham, Norfolk Hall (top centre) is an Elizabethan country house sleeping 14. Facilities include an outdoor heated pool, the use of two traditional beach huts on nearby Mundesley beach, an Elizabethan knot garden and spacious rooms, not least the medieval dining room which can seat up to 25. A butler or housekeeper is included in the rental price.

Brecon Beacons Manor (top right), sleeping 18, is a luxurious country retreat surrounded by 50 acres of parkland including a stream, croquet lawn, stables and a vegetable garden. A housekeeper is included, while a full catering service can be arranged on request, along with fishing, falconry and horse riding in the nearby hills.
